Tybee Island

TYBEE LIGHTHOUSE
Soon after establishing the Savannah settlement on Yamacraw Bluff, General James Oglethrope ordered the construction of a tower to aid navigation on the Savannah River. The "lighthouse" was built on Tybee Island. The original 90-foot structure, completed in 1736 and built of brick and cedar piles, was a day beacon because it was unlit. The original tower was soon destroyed by a storm. A second lighthouse was built in 1742 and lit about 1748. The Tybee Island lighthouse was the third built in America. The structure as seen today is 154 feet high and continues to serve as a welcoming beacon to ships entering the Savannah River and dock at the busy port of Savannah. Climb the steps to the top and enjoy the spectacular view. The lighthouse is located near Fort Screven at 30 Meddin Drive, 786-5801.

FORT SCREVEN
One of the last Atlantic coastal forts to be built (1875). The Fort was manned during the Spanish-American War, WWI and WWII. General Marshal commanded the fort during WWWII. Captain's Row is a must see and features homes that the Officers who were stationed at Fort Screven lived.
