As a child growing up in rural North Carolina, Dottie had a great appreciation for the beauty in the flowers and nature around her. While taking a "kiddie art" class in college, she discovered she had a real love and talent for art. She graduated from East Carolina College with BA and MA degrees in Elementary Education. She taught kindergarten, first grade and music for many years. She also ran her own monogram business for 15 years.
