I wasn't expecting much when I heard about Savannah's first annual Geekend 2009. Granted, I work for the oldest online marketing and web development company in Savannah -- Systems Connect, Inc -- and I am pretty geeky myself, but I wasn't looking forward to boring lectures about Google algorhythems, Graphic Design techniques and people making more money than me off of social networking and blogging techniques.
However, I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to immediately get my drink on during Friday's cocktail hour. Fly music, people hula hooping in the middle of the conference room, a giant inflatable wall of velcro that people were bouncing off of. This.... was geeky-cool I thought to myself. I began loosening up immediately.
After cocktail hour we were treated to an intriguing keynote speaker by the name of Aaron Draplin. He hilariously and skillfully told his story of zero to graphic design hero, a tale not riddled with spite and woe, but with determination, laid-back know-how and a delightful sense of humor. It was actually incredibly inspiring. A proverbial rags to riches story especially considering that Aaron Draplin designed President Obama's logos for his Stimulus Campaign with 2 days notice. Yikes.
After that Brady Keehn of MK2 music proceeded to explode my brain with his fantastic performance. No wonder he was voted Savannah's Best Electronic Artist by Connect. This guy put on one of the most amazing live shows, especially for the electronic genre, I have ever personally witnessed. His experiments into low-frequency sound knocked my sox off and I still can't find them.
From that point on I was hooked. The entire even went swimmingly.
